Heriberto López-Guzmán is an Associate in the Litigation Practice Group.
Practice
Mr. López-Guzmán has developed a general civil and commercial litigation practice with emphasis in construction law, contractual disputes, foreclosures and collections and general tort litigation in both state and federal courts, as well as administrative litigation. Mr. López-Guzman has also significant experience in complex civil forums. He is currently involved in the representation of a contractor in resolving over $300 million in disputes related to the design and construction of a $2.1 billion heavy-rail, commuter train system in Puerto Rico.
His experience in collection matters has also given him the opportunity to effectively assist one of the firm’s clients in a massive collection project consisting of hundreds of defaulted accounts. Mr. López-Guzmán has also assisted clients with various extraordinary remedies, including preliminary injunctions and provisional remedies to secure post-judgment safety and preservation of property. His accounting and business background has proven to be a helpful tool in assisting clients in civil litigations concerning financial fraud schemes, among others. Mr. López-Guzmán is also a member of the Government Enforcement and White Collar Defense Practice Area, where he practices criminal law focusing in white collar matters. As part of his experience in this area, Mr. López-Guzmán has been involved in the successful representation of clients in high profile cases of mail fraud and conspiracies to defraud the United States and Puerto Rico Governments.
Before joining McConnell Valdés LLC, Mr. López-Guzmán worked as an intern associate auditor at Deloitte & Touche, LLP (Puerto Rico office), where he audited clients in several specialized industries, such as banking and telecommunications.
Education
Mr. López-Guzmán obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business with a Major in Accounting, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus in 2002 and a Juris Doctor, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Puerto Rico School of Law in 2006.
Admissions
Mr. López-Guzmán is admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the U.S. District Court for the Puerto Rico District. He is a Certified Public Accountant and a registered Notary Public.
