Maggie Correa-Avilés is a Capital Member in the Labor and Employment Law Practice Group. She has been a member of the firm's Recruiting Committee, the Evaluations Committee, and is currently a member of the firm's Professional Development Committee and organizes the Labor and Employment group's internal seminars.

Practice Areas

For sixteen years prior to 1995 she was a member of our Litigation Practice Group. She has now specialized in Employment Law litigation, particularly discrimination, retaliation and sexual harassment. She also has extensive experience in civil and commercial litigation.

Education

She received a Master Degree in Law in 1975 from Columbia University, a Juris Doctor, cum laude, in 1974 from the University of Puerto Rico and a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in 1971 also from the University of Puerto Rico. She completed the courses towards the Doctorate degree in Civil Law from the University of Valladolid, Spain.

Admissions

She is admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the United States District Court for the District of Puerto Rico, the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, the United States Supreme Court and the District of Columbia.

She has twice argued before the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico and seven times before the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. The Supreme Court of Puerto Rico, which usually does not hold oral arguments, sustained Mrs. Correa's position revoking the Court of Appeals.

Mrs. Correa-Avilés is a member of the Puerto Rico Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, and the Washington, D.C. Bar. She was a member of the Board of Directors of the San Juan Cinemafest.

• Fuller Co. v. Ramon I. Gil, Inc., 782 F.2d 306 (1st Cir. 1986);
• Colgate-Palmolive Co. v. Mistolin de P.R., Inc., 117 D.P.R. 313 (1986);
• Tenoco Oil Co. v. Department of Consumer Affairs, 876 F.2d 1013 (1st Cir. 1989);
• Alfonso Bru v. Trane Export, Inc., 2001 TSPR 129 (2001);
• Marrero v. Goya of P.R., Inc., 304 F.3d 7, (1st Cir. 2002).

Professional Experience:

She was formerly an Assistant Solicitor General with the Office of the Solicitor General, Puerto Rico Justice Department, and a professor at the University of Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rico Junior College.

In 1979 she joined McConnell Valdés.
