Energy Matters

The McConnell Valdés Environmental, Energy & Land Use Practice Group has worked extensively on energy matters throughout the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, combining our legislative and regulatory experience with a practical knowledge of the various legal disciplines that are essential for the establishment and operation of a successful energy company.

Our clients include renewable and petroleum based energy production and distribution companies. For example, we serve as lead outside counsel for petroleum companies of varying sizes and engaged in upstream, midstream and downstream petroleum business transactions. Our work with clients of this nature includes zealous representation in administrative and litigation practice, drafting and obtaining permits, ensuring compliance and defending our clients' rights and business decisions.

In the field of renewable energy, we provide our clients with expert legal advice at all stages of contract negotiation and project development. Our Practice Group provides methodical advice from the early stages of site identification, contracting, through the construction and operation of the project. This sophisticated knowledge of permits and the permitting processes makes us the leading choice of energy attorneys in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

At the investment and lending stage, the Practice Group has served as counsel for cogeneration facility purchasers and investment groups, providing advice on due-diligence investigation, applications for and transferability of necessary state and federal environmental permits, transaction structure strategies, and other matters through and beyond the closing date. The Practice Group has also served as counsel in connection with power purchase and operating agreements.
