Biography

His primary practice area is tax law focusing on employee benefits and the design and implementation of qualified pension plans and deferred compensation arrangements. He has extensive experience in assisting "troubled" plans, including negotiations and submissions under the Puerto Rico Department of Treasury Closing Agreement program. Mr. Alonso also has significant experience and expertise in handling employee benefits matters in the mergers and acquisitions context.

Mr. Alonso was previously a Capital Member, Vice-Chair of the Tax Practice Group and leader of the Employee Benefits Practice team at McConnell Valdés. Prior to his return to the firm, he was an Of Counsel at Groom Law Group in Washington D.C., where he advised multinational companies with operations in Puerto Rico on matters related retirement plans and deferred compensation arrangements. Before originally joining McV, Mr. Alonso was a Senior Tax Consultant at Ernst & Young Puerto Rico. He has also served as General Manager and Comptroller at Marki, a local children's wear retail company, was a sole practitioner Certified Public Accountant and worked for several accounting firms and retailers both in Puerto Rico and the U.S.

He has prepared several Tax Alerts discussing major highlights of Puerto Rico tax legislation, and has published various articles concerning employee benefits, severance payments and other relevant tax laws. He has also published articles in The Benefits Law Journal and in Practical Law's Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation. Mr. Alonso has participated as co-lecturer in seminars sponsored by the Puerto Rico Society of Public Accountants and the Puerto Rico Bar Association discussing Puerto Rico Qualified and Non-Qualified Retirement Plans and Puerto Rico Income Tax Withholding and Reporting Obligations on Settlement and Separation from Service Agreements. He has also been a speaker at conventions and conferences sponsored by the American Bar Association, Banco Popular and Oriental Bank, among others.
