Pro Bono Program

The only Pro Bono program of its kind in Puerto Rico

Overview

McConnell Valdés has been a leader in supporting pro bono legal services in Puerto Rico since formally establishing its Pro Bono Program in 2006. We strongly believe it is our responsibility to provide free legal services to not-for-profit entities of limited means, serving the communities in which we live and work.

Since 2006, our attorneys have rendered legal assistance to more than 400 nonprofit organizations and logged more than 12,900 hours performing pro bono work. The services provided include review and drafting of contracts, preparation of Puerto Rico and U.S. tax exemption applications, corporate governance intellectual property counseling, and labor law assistance, among many others.

We are proud to collaborate with Fondos Unidos de Puerto Rico/United Way, Puerto Rico Community Foundation, and other leading foundations and nonprofit organizations in Puerto Rico, such as Fundación Angel Ramos and Asesores Financieros Comunitarios, which regularly refer grantees, member organizations, or nonprofit entities to our Pro Bono Program for assistance with transactional and non-contentious legal matters.

We encourage all of our attorneys – as well as our Summer Associates – to make a difference in the lives of those in need by participating in the program. Our attorneys counsel these institutions aiming at ensuring that Puerto Rico continues to have organizations that help improve our communities and the lives of Puerto Ricans. Each year, we recognize those attorneys who work more than 30 hours on pro bono matters. To honor their commitment, the firm makes a donation to a not-for-profit or organization of their choice.

As the exclusive Lex Mundi firm member for Puerto Rico, the firm actively supports and sponsors the Lex Mundi Pro Bono Foundation—a nonprofit organization that assists social entrepreneurs by matching them with critical, free legal services from Lex Mundi’s network of 160 member firms around the world.

McConnell Valdés is also a member of the Law Firm Pro Bono Project of the Pro Bono Institute, a Washington, DC-based not-for-profit organization that promotes and supports the pro bono efforts of major law firms, in-house corporate legal departments, and public interest organizations in the U.S. and around the world.
